VNC® Mobile Solution for Automotive
Control a mobile device or computer directly from a vehicle head unit or infotainment system
VNC Mobile Solution for Automotive is designed for OEM Partners to provide seamless integration of VNC remote access technology within their own products. A VNC Server installed on a mobile device can be viewed and controlled remotely by a VNC Viewer embedded into a new or existing Human Machine Interface (HMI) running on the vehicle head unit or aftermarket infotainment solution. For more information see the Product Brochure (PDF) and the Automotive Datasheet (PDF).
Packaged as a Software Development Kit (SDK), the VNC Viewer SDK provides support for the following mobile connectivity protocols:
- VNC Mobile Solution
- Based on the very latest version RFB4 protocol. To learn more visit http://www.realvnc.com/services/mobile.html
- Terminal Mode
- Based on VNC*, Terminal Mode is the specification published by Nokia and CE4A (Consumer Electronics for Automotive), the automotive industry working group comprising Audi, BMW, Daimler, Porsche and Volkswagen.
* Built on the older RFB3.8 protocol - iPod Out
- iPod Out is Apple's connectivity feature released in iOS 4 that allows a connected iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 or iPod touch to output and display the iPod video interface on the head unit screen and to accept remote control commands from vehicle input devices.
One advantage of VNC Mobile Solution for Automotive is it provides OEMs with the ability to have a single common HMI solution with access to the widest coverage of mobile devices, including many existing legacy devices already in use with end users.
The mobile device can be accessed and controlled from the vehicle’s head unit touch screen, bezel controls, steering wheel buttons and BMW’s iDrive. Users are able to access and play music collections stored on their iPod or iPhone direct from the vehicle’s main display unit, creating a simpler and safer way of browsing and selecting playlists and switching tracks using the vehicle controls.
VNC Mobile Solution for Automotive supports a number of different formats and solutions which are detailed below. It is already being deployed by blue-chip partners and automotive OEM’s with defined in-vehicle production dates. These include:
Security and Connectivity
VNC Mobile Solution for Automotive uses the very latest RFB4 protocol and provides backward compatibility for RFB3 variants, including Terminal Mode. The solution also gives OEM customers access to industry standard authentication and encryption options to provide a highly secure connection.
Safety
RFB4 also has message extension options that allow exchange of messages between the head unit and mobile device. This mechanism can be used for numerous purposes; one significant use is to report device application capabilities so that the head unit can police display and control of inappropriate applications by interlocking access and use with vehicle speed. Thus the important issues of driver distraction and a consistent quality of user experience can be controlled by the automotive OEM, meeting both brand quality constraints and legal and regulatory compliance needs.
VNC Mobile Solution for Automotive is compatible with virtually any mobile device and embedded automotive head unit platform.
