Introduction

These are the release notes for VNC Viewer since its first release.

VNC Viewer for iOS 2.0.3 - released 15th May 2012

  • Updated graphics to support the new iPad.
  • The VNC Viewer toolbar is now displayed by a gesture (three finger swipe down for iPad; single swipe up from the bottom of the screen for iPhone/iPod touch), and can be pinned for permanency.
  • Keyboard keys such as Shift, Alt, and Tab are now represented by familiar icons rather than text on the scrolling key bar.
  • FIXED: Connections to third party and community VNC-compatible Server projects (such as that built-in to VMware) can be made more reliably by selecting Picture Quality > Let the computer decide.

VNC Viewer for iOS 2.0.2 - released 25th January 2012

  • Connection information can now be logged to files available when a device connects to iTunes.
  • The VNC Viewer version number is now available from Settings > VNC Viewer.
  • FIXED: Connections to VNC Free Edition or to community VNC-compatible Server projects are now more reliable.

VNC Viewer for iOS 2.0.1 - released 13th December 2011

  • FIXED: The performance of VNC Viewer has been improved across slower networks.
  • FIXED: VNC Viewer now enables you to control the mouse cursor more responsively.
  • FIXED: VNC Viewer no longer unexpectedly terminates a connection on switch back in.
  • FIXED: Connections from iPhone 3G devices no longer occasionally fail.
  • FIXED: Splitting the iPad virtual keyboard no longer disables the toolbar.

VNC Viewer for iOS 2.0 - released 23rd November 2011

  • NEW: Multitasking. A connection is now maintained for approximately ten minutes on switch out from VNC Viewer. At this time, you are prompted to briefly switch back in order to maintain the connection for another ten minutes.
  • NEW: Full screen display. VNC Viewer now shows the entire desktop of a connected computer. Touch the screen to show a toolbar.
  • NEW: Searchable connections. Connections can now be filtered to quickly find the one you want.
  • NEW: External monitors. A connected computer's desktop is automatically transfered to an external monitor if one is plugged in to the device. The device screen then acts as a keyboard and mouse.
  • NEW: Apple TV. A connected computer's desktop is automatically transferred to Apple TV if AirPlay Mirroring is turned on (iOS 5 devices only). The device screen then acts as a keyboard and mouse.
  • NEW: Programmatic connectivity. Start VNC Viewer and connect automatically using the URI scheme
    vnc://[<username>[:<password>]]@<network_address>[:<port>].

VNC Viewer for iOS 1.4.1 - released 16th August 2011

  • FIXED: Changes by Apple to Screen Sharing built-in to Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion) have been mitigated by alterations to the authentication mechanism. This means you can now connect to Screen Sharing built-in to any supported version of Mac OS X using your Mac user name and password. You no longer need to specify a separate VNC password. (If you choose to turn off VNC Viewers may control screen with password, note you must restart Screen Sharing.)

VNC Viewer for iOS 1.4 - released 4th January 2011

  • NEW: Connections to the latest versions of VNC Enterprise Edition and VNC Personal Edition can be secured end-to-end using 256-bit AES encryption.
  • NEW: Image information is compressed more efficiently for better performance over low bandwidth connections to the latest versions of VNC Enterprise Edition and VNC Personal Edition.
  • FIXED: Searching for available Bonjour-enabled computers no longer impairs the performance of subsequent connections.

VNC Viewer for iOS 1.3.2 - released 8th November 2010

  • NEW: VNC Viewer now supports iOS 4.2, including multitasking features for iPad, and IPv6. Note that connections are closed on app switch out from VNC Viewer.

VNC Viewer for iOS 1.3.1 - released 25th September 2010

  • FIXED: The virtual keyboard no longer fails to appear on iOS4 devices in low memory states.

VNC Viewer for iOS 1.3 - released 21st July 2010

  • NEW: VNC Viewer now provides support for iOS 4. Note that, for your security, connections are closed on app switch out from VNC Viewer running on multitasking devices.
  • NEW: VNC Viewer now provides support for Bonjour Service Discovery, making it simple to locate and connect to computers on a local network.
  • A message now appears upon connection indicating whether the remote control session will be encrypted or not.
  • The scrolling key bar now has buttons representing the Enter keyboard key and, for connections to Mac computers, the Option key.
  • Double-tapping the Status Bar now scrolls to the top of connection lists.
  • FIXED: VNC Viewer no longer checks for Internet connectivity before connecting to a computer on a private network.

  • FIXED: Intermittent crash during rotation on some iPads.

VNC Viewer for iOS 1.2 - released 21st April 2010

  • NEW: VNC Viewer now provides full support for the iPad.
  • NEW: Function, modifier, editing, navigation, and other computer keyboard keys are now available on a scrolling key bar.
  • NEW: You can now zoom fully out to see the whole desktop of a connected computer.
  • NEW: You can now temporarily obscure sensitive text as you type it, for example passwords.

VNC Viewer for iOS 1.1 - released 29th March 2010

  • NEW: Support for AMX touch panels embedding VNC-compatible Server technology.
  • NEW: A connection can have a user-friendly name.
  • NEW: A connection can have a desktop preview after it is first established.
  • There is now a button to dismiss the on-screen keyboard. You no longer have to tap the screen.
  • When the keyboard is displayed, moving the mouse cursor is now the same user experience as when the keyboard is dismissed.
  • A message now warns if connecting to Screen Sharing or Remote Management built-in to Mac OS X 10.4+ and VNC Viewers may control screen with password is not enabled.
