New version released of VNC® Viewer Plus that utilizes Intel® KVM Remote Control
RealVNC releases v1.1 enabling users to connect directly to Intel® KVM remote control functionality embedded in the Intel® Core™ i5 vPro™ processor
14th September 2010, Intel Developer Forum 2010, San Francisco: RealVNC has released an update for VNC® Viewer Plus, a viewer that connects directly to the Intel® KVM remote control functionality embedded in the Intel® Core™ i5 vPro™ processor.
By connecting to a VNC Server embedded on the chip, IT and service helpdesk providers no longer need to rely on a functioning operating system and network drivers to take control of an affected user’s PC. With out-of-band KVM access complex issues such as OS failures and boot problems can be diagnosed and addressed remotely. Users can watch a full PC boot sequence, manipulate BIOS settings or re-install an operating system without needing to make a physical trip to the PC.
With an increasing emphasis on Green IT, the technology also provides organizations with an opportunity to save energy. PCs are no longer required to be left on overnight to enable IT technicians to perform maintenance or deploy time-critical software patches. Using VNC Viewer Plus connected to the Intel Core vPro chip, IT technicians can boot up machines from a remote location, perform upgrades and then power down the machine, without needing to leave their desks. By switching off machines overnight organizations will benefit from energy efficiencies and cost savings from reduced power consumption.
Version 1.1 of VNC Viewer Plus contains new features such as programmatic connectivity, enabling users to start VNC Viewer Plus and connect automatically from a command line or a web browser using the URI scheme kvm://username:password@host_computer. Additional enhancements include the ability to remotely mount CD/DVD images for remote installation and patching, as well as improved connectivity and keyboard support.
VNC Viewer Plus is available to trial and purchase at www.realvnc.com/products/viewerplus under end user and OEM licensing models. It is also available as an SDK, enabling ISVs/Developers to integrate the viewer into their own applications for distribution to their end users. This option allows software vendors in markets such as device management and helpdesk to integrate with Intel KVM quickly. With VNC the majority of the hard work is already done and vendors can save valuable development time and get to market sooner.
“After the overwhelming reception of VNC Viewer Plus in both stand-alone and OEM bundled versions, we have been busy with some significant developments and enhancements which are now released in v1.1,” said Dr Andy Harter, CEO of RealVNC. “Further still, we have a comprehensive roadmap of developments for this ground-breaking technology which, in ongoing partnership with Intel, continue to build a totally compelling in-built remote access experience.”
