RealVNC CEO wins Royal Academy of Engineering Silver Medal

June 8 2010, Cambridge UK: Dr Andy Harter, Chief Executive Officer of RealVNC, has won a prestigious Royal Academy of Engineering Silver Medal for his outstanding personal contribution to British engineering. He is most notably responsible for VNC (Virtual Network Computing), a technology invented in 1995 that provides remote graphical access to a computer screen. Dr Harter founded RealVNC in 2002 to promote VNC as a standard and commercialize new products based on the technology.

Dr Harter’s drive and vision for VNC resulted in a simple universal tool that allows any type of computer to access remotely the screen of any other type of computer. His foresight paid off, with hundreds of millions of copies of the software now in use all over the world and included in software bundles and hardware systems.

Dr Harter was thrilled to accept the medal at the Academy Awards Dinner in London on Monday 7 June. He said: “I am delighted to receive the Silver Medal, and pleased that the success in translating first-rate engineering into commercial success is recognized and appreciated.”

“The elegance and simplicity of VNC is enduring, and new applications present themselves constantly. Remote access to and from consumer electronics such as Smartphone and tablet devices is another revolutionary application area with VNC at the forefront.”
